Port of Ibiza
The Port of Ibiza is a commercial, passenger and sports fishing port in the city of Ibiza, Spain, considered of general interest and managed by Puertos del Estado. The port has, in addition to the docks for goods and passengers, the Botafuego dock, where the fuel consumed by the island is unloaded and where the large tourist cruise ships that call at the island moor. It also has several sports docks with a total of 1,400 moorings for recreational vessels.
Since the Carthaginians founded a colony in 650 BC, they turned the port into an important naval base for their navy. The Romans made Ibiza a federated city and maintained the flourishing commercial activity that it already had under Carthaginian domination. In the 17th century there were already buildings for port purposes and a dock in the Arrabal area.
The current facilities date from the beginning of the 20th century, with the construction of the breakwater that protects the southern area of the port. Since then, important improvement works have been carried out, but it was not until 1980 that the port of Ibiza was equipped with the infrastructure used today.
