Church of Santa Agnes
This small, whitewashed church from the 18th century stands out for its low height and its two entrances
The church of Santa Agnes de Corona was built at the end of the 18th century to meet the spiritual needs of the inhabitants of Pla de Corona, one of the most isolated areas of Ibiza. Despite this, it was a fairly large community, due to the fertility of the land on the plain, which made it ideal for agriculture. The whitewashed church, with a single nave and six side chapels, began to be built in 1785 and was finished in 1812, although religious services had already been held there for many years before.
It is an atypical church for two reasons. Firstly, it is striking for its low height, unique on the island. Apparently, the reason is that the inhabitants of Corona entered into a competition with those of Sant Mateu, to see who would finish their church first. Given the difficulties and lack of resources, they decided to cut the height in order to finish the work sooner. The interior, far from being damaged, allows you to enjoy the beautiful lines of the nave from a closer perspective.
In addition, the temple has two entrances: the usual one facing south, preceded by a porch, and another side entrance. This second entrance was built after a crime occurred in 1870, at the main entrance of the temple. Many neighbours and relatives of the deceased refused to use this entrance, so it was decided to wall it up and open a new one on the façade of the square. The old one was not used again until 1965. Inside you can see a sculpture of the Mother of God of the Rosary which, like the temple, dates from 1812. Its author is unknown.
