Es Vedrá
Es Vedrá, the most enigmatic islet in Ibiza Of the nine islets that surround the perimeter of Ibiza, the island of Es Vedrá is, without a doubt, the one that generates the most attraction among locals and foreigners. Located southwest of Ibiza, less than 2 kilometers from its coast, this mysterious rock pyramid of almost 400 meters in height leaves everyone who looks at it with their mouths open. Owned by thirty Ibizan families, since 2002 Es Vedrá has been part, together with the neighboring islet of Es Vedranell, of the Natural Park of Cala d’Hort, Cap Llentrisca and Sa Talaia, a protection figure that prohibits visits to the general public, but does not prevent boat trips around it. In addition, Es Vedrá is within the Natura 2000 Network, thanks to its recognition as a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA). If we add to all this the myths, secrets and legends that Es Vedrá has been carrying around since ancient times, a visit to it becomes quite an adventure.
The island of Es Vedrá has become one of the most representative images of wild Ibiza. Its 80 hectares of limestone rock are home, despite the inclement weather, to a rich fauna and flora, in many cases possessing endemic species of great ecological value. On the one hand, we find a total of 116 catalogued plants, among which those of a marine nature stand out: the posidonia oceanica meadows of its soft bottoms, for example. On the other hand, Es Vedrá also provides shelter to numerous species of birds, such as the Balearic shearwater and the peregrine falcon; lizards, such as the Pitiusas lizard; and invertebrates, such as the helicidae snail. And, until its disappearance in 2016, it also served as home to an entire colony of goats.
